TWO WHEELED TOYS

Motorcycles. What red-blooded male doesn't love the thrill of having 150 horsepower right in between your legs while flying down a stretch of mint asphault at 180MPH!

YAMAHA R1

My motorcycle is a 2000 Yamaha YZF-R1 super-sport bike.

Unlike my previous Yamaha FZR-600, the R1 came stock with almost everything I wanted. 150 horsepower and almost 100 lb/ft of torque is suiting me just fine for now. I have made no real modifications to the bike other than some subtle adjustments. I plan to modify the suspension slightly, as my friend Art has suggested. We'll have to see how significantly it improves my track times.

I don't have too many comments about this bike, except that it is probably one of the nicest bikes I've ever had a chance to ride. The bike is very light (around 400 pounds wet weight) and even with a relatively large guy like myself (large for racing) our total weight is well under 600 lbs. That's about a 4:1 weight to horsepower ratio... This bike is also excellent for showing off and doing tricks. Wheelies are easily accomplished in 1st and 2nd gear simply by turning the throttle. ;-)

COMMUNICATIONS

When riding around with my friends it's very helpful to be able to communicate. All my riding buddies already had the Chatterbox HJC-FRS system, which clips onto the side of your helmet, and includes a headset/microphone for install. It works pretty good at low speeds (below 100MPH) but it's pretty useless above 100MPH since there is just too much wind noise, especially in my Arai which are infamous for being loud, but still they have the best fit and are considered by many to be the best helmet made.

TRACK DAY

I cannot stress this enough, to anyone who wants to bring their bike to the track, you MUST have a checklist of things to bring. There are simply too many items that will slip your mind to try and just "remember" what you will need. Check out my list, I adopted it from another racer's list.

PAINFUL MOMENT

One morning before a race I could NOT find my bike lock key, I think I lost it while cleaning my closet the night before, but anyway, I had to call a locksmith over to cut the Kryptonite U-lock off the front disc of my motorcycle so I could make it to the track, haha...
